FAQ

What exactly is a "billet" portafilter?

Most portafilters are made from two or more parts: a metal body that's cast into shape, and a stamped steel basket. These are usually mass-produced quickly and cheaply, which is fine for basic use, but not ideal for long-term durability or performance.

Ours is different.

We start with a solid block of food-grade stainless steel (called a billet) and carefully carve it into its final shape using advanced machining methods. This process takes much longer, but it means there are no welds, seams, or weak points, and no parts to disassemble or collect debris. Just one strong, durable, precision piece.

The result? Better thermal stability, easier cleaning, and a more solid, premium feel in-hand. It's built to last a lifetime.

What makes your portafilter better than others?

Highest Extraction Yield – Our billet design allows for the industry's widest hole pattern, promoting even flow through the entire puck, and excellent flavor in the cup.

Thermal Stability – Machined from a solid billet of stainless steel, it holds heat incredibly well for consistent extractions.

Convex Base Geometry – Helps guide espresso flow into a single center stream during extraction, reducing messy "raining" shots.

No Disassembly Needed – Cleaning is simple. Pucks also knock effortlessly out of the high-polish interior of the basket. No separate basket to disassemble and clean.

Lifetime Durability – No welds, coatings, or fragile parts. Just solid, food-grade stainless steel.

Why is your portafilter more expensive than others?

Typical portafilters are mass-produced using low-cost methods like casting or stamping, and manufactured in large volumes, which drives prices down. Ours is different.

Each finer Coffee Co. portafilter is precision-machined from a solid billet of stainless steel using a slow, meticulous combination of CNC and EDM processes. We then hand-polish every unit for a refined finish. This takes far more time and care, but results in a stunning, ultra-durable tool built for a lifetime of use.

We also produce in very small batches for a niche audience, all of which contributes to the higher price.

Can I change the basket size?

We’ve found that consistency is key to great espresso. While many portafilters are designed for frequent swapping of baskets, ours is optimized for precision and repeatability. It's sized for an 18-20g dose, depending on the particular coffee density.

Rather than introducing variables, we aim to eliminate them — and many of our customers appreciate having a fixed, known quantity that just works, and produces a delicious cup— day in, and day out.

Is it compatible with my espresso machine?

Our portafilter is designed around the industry-standard 58mm commercial size, which is used by most high-end machines including La Marzocco, ECM, Rocket, Slayer- just to name a few. If you’re unsure, feel free to reach out — we’re happy to confirm compatibility.

What handle options do you offer?

Each portafilter ships with a hand-finished wooden handle, available in several premium wood variants. Handles thread on, and can be swapped out in the future for just about any finish you can dream of!

How do I clean it?

Our portafilter is designed to be rinsed clean with water — no need for disassembly or soaking. For deeper cleans, you can use espresso machine cleaner on the metal components. We don’t recommend submerging the wooden handle for long periods.

Do you offer international shipping?

Yes — we ship worldwide. Rates and delivery times vary depending on location and will be calculated at checkout.
